princess公主, prince王子, witch巫婆, angel天使

Dear friends,

Here is the Chinese lesson today, we are going to learn the Be verb 是(is, was) with the subjects 他(he) and 她(she). Please watch the following video for the example phrases:

The first phrase 1-1:

She is a princess.

她是公主
Tā shì gōng-zhǔ

她(she) + 是(is) + 公主(princess)

she

is
shì

princess
公主
gōng-zhǔ

note: the subject 她(she) is a modern Chinese version, it was appeared in the modern Chinese translation from the western literature, the female subject SHE. In classic Chinese literature there were not much (even none) forms for male and female format nouns and other related verb variations as in English, French or other western languages.

note2: the Be verb 是(is) could be also used as a plural form as "are" in English, or the past tense "was, were" in English. This part of Chinese grammar is quite simple, not much plurality of past tense should be emphasized like the western languages, kind of ambiguous. Isn't it? For example: the Chinese phrase 他(he)是我的朋友(He is my friend), and 她(she)是我的朋友(She is my friend) the pronunciation are all the same in Chinese, you can not tell 他(he) or 她(she)from the pronunciations, it might cause confusion while in conversation.
