sweet 甜 and sugar 糖, salty 鹹 and salt 鹽

Dear friends,

We will learn few Chinese words about sweet 甜 and sugar 糖, salty 鹹 and 鹽 salt in this lesson. Some of them are in complicated traditional Chinese characters, but don't worry about that, you don't need to memorize the handwriting of them. What our purpose is learning the pronunciation by pinyin of each character/word throughout the whole phrase, to understand more Chinese idioms for your practice.

Please watch the instruction video as follow:

The first part of the first phrase is a Chinese idiom format:

adjective + negative adjective

as like:

Is it sweet enough?

甜不甜

甜(sweet) + 不甜(not sweet)

This is a Chinese idiom form for an interrogative sentence, expecting on the two opposite answers:

甜(sweet) or 不甜(not sweet)

and the following part of the interrogative sentence:

Do you want to add sugar?
要不要加糖

要不要(Do you want..) + 加(add) + 糖(sugar)

Please note here is another similar idiom format:

verb + negative verb

要不要(Do you want..)

要(want) + 不要(not want)

This is the same Chinese idiom form for an interrogative sentence, focusing on the two opposite answers:

要(want) or 不要(not want)

The answers could be:

want to add sugar
加糖

don't want to add sugar
不要加糖

The second phrase is the same type as the previous one:

Is it salty enough?
鹹不鹹

鹹(salty) + 不鹹(not salty)

This is a Chinese idiom form for an interrogative sentence, focusing on the two opposite answers:

adjective + negative adjective

鹹(salty) or 不鹹(not salty)

and the following part of the interrogative sentence:

Do you want to add salt?
要不要加鹽

要不要(Do you want..) + 加(add) + 鹽(salt)

Again, I am using traditional Chinese characters in my videos, yet never mind about the complexity of those characters while watching the videos, there are pinyin notation for each character/word (in standard Mandarin) and you know what? Almost 80% of the simplified and traditional Chinese characters are the same or look similar while reading. You will learn how to read and speak standard Mandarin eventually after practicing with my series of Chinese lesson videos.

Have a nice day!
