roadside路邊, riverside河邊, seaside海邊, lakeside湖邊

Dear friends,

Here is the newest lesson today, and we are going to learn the Chinese character 邊(side), which will induce several 2-character words for location, like 路邊(roadside), 河邊(riverside), 海邊(seaside), and 湖邊(lakeside). Please watch the video of the following lesson:

The first phrase:

by the roadside

在路邊
zài lù biān

在(at) + 路(road) + 邊(side)

Here the 2-character word:

roadside
路邊
lù biān

路邊(roadside) = 路(road) + 邊(side)

We may extend the phrase into a longer version:

standing by the roadside

站在路邊
zhàn zài lù biān

站(stand) + 在(at) + 路邊(roadside)

Let's keep extending to a longer phrase:

standing by the roadside and waiting for someone
站在路邊等人
zhàn zài lù biān děng rén

站(stand) + 在(at) + 路邊(roadside) + 等人(waiting for someone)

等人(waiting for someone) = 等(wait) + 人(people)

The second phrase:

at the riverside
在河邊
zài hé biān

在(at) + 河(river) + 邊(side)

We may extend the phrase into a longer version:

fishing by the river
在河邊釣魚
zài hé biān diào-yú

在(at) + 河邊(riverside) + 釣魚(fishing)

Here the 2-character words:

riverside
河邊
hé biān

河邊(riverside) = 河(river) + 邊(side)

fishing

釣魚
diào-yú

釣魚(fishing) = 釣(to fish) + 魚(fish)

Let's keep extending to a longer phrase:

The child is fishing by the river.

小孩在河邊釣魚
Xiǎo-hái zài hé biān diào-yú

小孩(child, kid) + 在(at) + 河邊(riverside) + 釣魚(fishing)

here the 2-character word:

child
小孩
xiǎo-hái

小孩(child) = 小(little) + 孩(child)

is one of the 2-character Chinese words which mean "child, children," the other one is 孩子(háizi, child), which we will learn in our future lessons.

The third phrase:

go to the seaside

到海邊
dào hǎi-biān

到(go) + 海(sea) + 邊(side)

We may extend the phrase into a longer version:

go to the seaside and watch the sea
到海邊看海
dào hǎi-biān kàn hǎi

到(go) + 海邊(seaside) + 看(watch) + 海(sea)

Here the 2-character words:

seaside
海邊
hǎi biān

海邊(seaside) = 海(sea) + 邊(side)

watch the sea
看海
kàn hǎi

看海(watch the sea) = 看(watch) + 海(sea)

Let's keep extending to a longer phrase:

The woman goes to the seaside and watches the sea.
女人到海邊看海
Nǚ-rén dào hǎi-biān kàn hǎi

女人(woman) + 到(go) + 海邊(seaside) + 看海(watch the sea)

here the 2-character Chinese word:

woman
女人
nǚ-rén

女人(woman) = 女(female) + 人(people)

In modern Chinese, this 2-character word 女人(nǚ-rén, woman) could mean "woman" or "women" since it usually doesn't emphasize the plurality of a noun in Chinese grammar.

The fourth phrase:

by the lakeside
在湖邊
zài hú biān

在(at) + 湖(lake) + 邊(side)

We may extend the phrase into a longer version:

camping by the lakeside
在湖邊露營
zài hú biān lù-yíng

在(at) + 湖邊(lakeside) + 露營(camping)

Here the 2-character words:

lakeside
湖邊
hú biān

湖邊(lakeside) = 湖(lake) + 邊(side)

camping
露營
lù-yíng

露營(camping) = 露(expose) + 營(camp)

Let's keep extending to a longer phrase:

The man is camping by the lakeside.
男人在湖邊露營
Nán-rén zài hú biān lù-yíng

男人(man) + 在(at) + 湖邊(lakeside) + 露營(camping)

here the 2-character word:

man
男人
nán-rén

男人(man) = 男(male) + 人(people)

In modern Chinese, this 2-character word 男人(nán-rén, man) could mean "man" or "men" since it usually doesn't emphasize the plurality of a noun in Chinese grammar.
