listen to music 聽音樂, listen to stories 聽故事, tell stories 說故事, fabricate a story 編故事

Dear friends,

Here is the video lesson today, and we are going to learn the Chinese verb 聽(listen, hear) connected with the words 音樂(music) and 故事(story). We also connect the word 故事(story) with related verbs, such as 聽(listen, hear), 說(tell, say), and 編(fabricate) to form the phrases like listen to a story, tell a story, and fabricate a story. Please watch the following video lesson for the lesson today:

The first phrase:

listen to music

聽音樂
tīng yīn-yuè

聽(listen) + 音樂(music)

the verb:

listen, hear
tīng

the noun:

music
音樂
yīn-yuè

Let's extend the phrase to a longer sentence:

I like to listen to music.
我喜歡聽音樂
Wǒ xǐ-huān tīng yīn-yuè

我喜歡(I like) + 聽音樂(listen to music)

It's the combination of two phrases:

I like...
我喜歡
wǒ xǐ-huān

我(I) + 喜歡(like)

and

listen to music

聽音樂
tīng yīn-yuè

聽(listen) + 音樂(music)

Please check the analysis of phrases and vocabulary of this lesson via my database site:

The 2nd phrase:

listen to stories
聽故事
tīng gù-shì

聽(listen) + 故事(story)

the verb:

listen, hear
tīng

the noun:

story
故事
gù-shì

note: for the 2-character word 故事(story), story is the same as stories in Chinese, since the plurality of a noun is not emphasized in most Chinese words, this part of grammar is easier than English.

Let's extend the phrase to a longer sentence:

I like listening to stories.
我喜歡聽故事
Wǒ xǐ-huān tīng gù-shì

我喜歡(I like) + 聽故事(listen to stories)

It's the combination of two phrases:

I like...
我喜歡
wǒ xǐ-huān

我(I) + 喜歡(like)

and

listen to stories
聽故事
tīng gù-shì

聽(listen) + 故事(story)

The 3rd phrase:

tell stories
說故事
shuō gù-shì

說(tell) + 故事(story)

the verb:

tell
shuō

and the noun:

story
故事
gù-shì

note: for the 2-character word 故事(story)story is the same as stories in Chinese, since the plurality of a noun is not emphasized in most Chinese words, this part of grammar is easier than English.

Let's extend the phrase to a longer sentence:

She is very good at storytelling.
她很會說故事
Tā hěn huì shuō gù-shì

她(she) + 很會(very good at) + 說故事(tell stories)

the adverb:

very good at something
很會
hěn huì

You can find the word 很會(very good at) for several examples and lessons from my mp3 library site:

The 4th phrase:

fabricate a story
編故事
biān gù-shì

編(fabricate) + 故事(story)

the verb:

fabricate, make up
biān

and the noun:

story
故事
gù-shì

Let's extend the phrase to a longer sentence:

Don't fabricate a story to deceive people.
不要編故事騙人
Bú yào biān gù-shì piàn rén

不要(do not) + 編故事(fabricate a story) + 騙人(deceive people)

the 2-character phrase:

do not
不要
bú yào

不(no, not) + 要(want, must)

note: the 2-character phrase 不要 could be used as "don't want" or "must not, don't" in Chinese.

and the verb:

deceive people
騙人
piàn rén

騙(deceive, lie) + 人(people)

I think that's all for the lesson today, there are more related examples which are not shown in the video lesson. Please check my mp3 library site for more words, phrases and examples:
